The Framers of the Bill of Rights did not purport to "create" rights. Rather, they designed the Bill of Rights to prohibit our Government from infringing rights and liberties presumed to be preexisting. ~Justice William J. Brennan, 1982
The purpose of this Committee is to effectively educate the student body of their legal rights as citizens and members of the Longwood University community. This will be perused by creating a large educational campaign, targeting students and allowing them to access information that expands their knowledge of rights as individuals. The Committee will create and present information to students in ways that are accessible and that will enhance their understanding of the law and how it affects them.

RE: Political Signage and Meeting
At our last meeting, we discussed the issue of political signage on campus and university grounds. We agreed to consider policy proposals and committee opinions at our next meeting. I attended the Community Standards Community meeting this past Friday. The Community Standards Committee will be looking to us for recommendations on policy regarding political signage. One proposed policy has been forwarded to the Community Standards Committee, one that only allows political signs within the Free Speech Area behind the Student Union. If you disagree with this proposal, it is important that you create a draft policy and bring it to our next meeting. Otherwise, we will take no action on this. We will not be creating policy at the meeting, but we will be discussing proposed policies that you all bring to the table. If possible, please send me your recommendations before our next meeting so I can make copies for all. Again, this is very important as Community Standards will be looking to us for a student opinion!
Our next meeting will be on February 26th, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. in the Student Union. We will be voting on recommendations to be forwarded to the Community Standards Committee then.
So come prepared! E-mail me if you have any questions.
