The meeting was called to order by Jordan Miles. Mrs. Thompson and Cameron Patterson were introduced to the committee. The minutes from the September 16th meeting were approved by the committee. The Constitution Day event was a success along with the Judicial and Honor Boards Mock Hearing Event

Mrs. Thompson gave an update on the search for the Chief of Police for the town of Farmville. There are sixty applicants that are hoping for the position. Mrs. Thompson is part of the committee to help choose the chief. She is keeping the issues and concerns of the Longwood community in mind as she helps find the right person for the job. The committee was also informed that there are four new police officers that have been hired by the Farmville Police. The committee hopes that the four officers will be able to come to campus and mingle with the campus community.

Each of the sub-committees within the Joint Committee on Student Rights Education are working on stressing the importance of pedestrian safety.  There was a lot of discussion regarding this issue as it has become a specific area of study within the committee. After the discussion the committee decided to produce a survey with ten questions regarding pedestrian safety. We are working with Longwood’s institutional and assessment center to work on the survey. We are hoping to have at least 25-30% of the campus participate.

The second specific area of study that the committee has interest in is the closure of the Town of Farmville Police Assessment. There was discussion about how to help with the closure of this issue, but Mrs. Thompson informed the committee that there could be no real closure until a new Chief of Police was chosen. It was suggested that the town council make some type of statement regarding the assessment. Mrs. Thompson responded by saying she would try to have Gerry Spates make some type of statement to inform the campus community of what action is being taken in regards to the assessment.

There were no additional comments, questions, or concerns brought before the committee. The meeting was called to adjournment by Jordan Miles. The next meeting time and place will be emailed to all committee members once decided by the officers of the committee.
